Medtech in the Metro Vancouver region

• Talent availability is constraining growth. B.C.’s life sciences cluster is expanding rapidly, with 28,500 people employed across ~1,800 firms and a 27 per cent increase in GDP since 2019. However, a widening talent gap - projected to exceed 5,500 workers by 2027 – threatens to stall momentum.
• Scaling companies need specialized talent. Small and medium firms that are trying to scale – especially those making the leap from employing hundreds to employing thousands – are looking for specialized regulatory or quality assurance, clinical, biomanufacturing, and commercialization skills that current training pipelines don’t supply quickly enough.

Program structure

• Aggregate demand with peer employers to focus on shared needs and building a stronger talent pipeline.
• Co-design learning pathways, such as workshops, micro-credentials, or applied learning.
• Match and measure outcomes on hiring needed, time-to-productive hire, and retention, with built-in feedback loops and research for continuous improvement.
