Metro Vancouver is facing a significant labour shortage, with over 625,600 job vacancies projected in the next decade, particularly in key sectors like technology, clean tech, and life sciences. As rapid advancements in technology shorten skill lifespans, the need for agile, industry-driven training models has never been more urgent. Addressing these talent challenges is crucial in strengthening our regional economy to make it future-proof, resilient, inclusive, and globally competitive.
Invest Vancouver has been proactively working to address the region’s workforce challenges. In 2024, the Metro Vancouver Board approved the creation of a business plan and outreach strategy for a workforce development initiative. This decision followed extensive research, stakeholder engagement, and industry consultations, highlighting the urgent need for a centralized approach to skills development. The goal is to build a robust talent pipeline that aligns with the evolving demands of the regional economy while also attracting foreign direct investment (FDI).
Invest Vancouver has launched the Invest Talent project, a pilot program earmarked from April to September 2025, to engage 60 employers across the region in three industry-driven pilots focused on addressing critical skills needs. During this period, 120 participants will receive targeted upskilling and hands-on training to align their abilities with real-world job requirements. By building an inclusive and sustainable talent pipeline, the project not only supports businesses but also strengthens Metro Vancouver's position as an attractive destination for FDI, offering companies confidence in the region's ability to meet their workforce demands.
